Description
Queirón is the project of the Pérez Cuevas family and the dream of Gabriel Pérez, Gabriel still lives in an unassuming house in Quel, from where, for the last 10 years he designed and managed the construction of the new Queirón winery. Nestled into the hillside, it is built to replicate the traditional gravity fed wine caves in the town, and under the winery sits the old family cave, where for generations before, they made their local wine.
El Arca was one of the many small plots that Gabriel acquired over the last 30 years. His neighbours in Quel scratched their heads in wonder, questioning why he was buying these under productive small vineyard plots. But Gabriel had a vision that is now bearing fruit.
The El Arca wine spans three centuries, the original vines were planted in the 19th century, there are records in the village of Quel mentioning the vines back in 1892. The vineyard is only 0.89 hectares in size and only 1,947 bottles were produced of the 2017 vintage.
The wine spends 7 months in French oak and uses yeast taken from the El Arca vineyard to ferment the wine. It is then stored on its lees in egg shaped concrete cylinders for a further 20 months.
The wine is almost indescribable, dark cherry red, massive and full ripe red fruits with floral nuances. The taste is opulent, incredibly deep, and full. A true expression of terroir and a taste from the past.
